CHRISTINE BERMEA
SAN JUAN - Christine Bermea, 53, went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Chirst on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, in San Juan surrounded by her family. Christine was preceded in death by her parents, Jose R. Bermea and Juanita (Degollado) Bermea; her brother-in-law, Michael Delgadillo.
Christine was a cherished daughter, sister, friend, mother and avid gardener. She worked hard to create a backyard oasis at her San Juan home where many plants, flowers, and butterflies are thriving. Christine graduated from PSJA High School in 1988. That same year, she followed through on a dare to compete in a beauty pageant and was blessed to be crowned Miss Pharr. She began her studies at the University of Texas Pan American in 1994, but put them on pause to become more active in her family’s local businesses. She later returned and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree in Management in 2012.
Christine served the Rio Grande Valley as a small business owner and manager for over 30 years. Guided by her father and alongside her sisters, she supported the operation of two successful family businesses. For 20 years, she conducted business at Bermea’s Volksland Auto Service in Pharr, TX and managed Mid-Valley Express Exxon in Weslaco, Texas. It was during this time that she made history and became the first woman Vehicle Inspector for the Texas Department of Public Safety in the Rio Grande Valley. Upon the sale of Mid-Valley Express in 2011, Christine studied to become a licensed insurance broker and tax preparer. In 2013, she opened Bermea Insurance Agency. For 10 years, Christine helped local families, friends, and valued clients protect the things that meant most to them. Her intimate ties to the community, entrepreneurial prowess and deep commitment to exceptional service made her a widely trusted and respected businesswoman. Christine was active in her career until May 2023, the 10th anniversary of Bermea Insurance Agency.
Christine was committed to expressing her care for her community through service. From 1994-1995, Christine served as President and Financial Advisor of Delta Zeta Sorority at The University of Texas Pan American. From 2009-2011, Christine served as Vice President of the San Juan Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Since 2011, she had been a member of the San Juan Crime Stoppers Board of Directors.
Christine was a strong believer in God and prioritized her church community her entire life. She made a home at Palm Valley Church in Mission, TX where she was an active member and volunteer.
Ms. Bermea is survived by three loving children, Calista Lopez of Austin, Portia Lopez of San Juan, and Jet Lopez of San Juan; three sisters, Elizabeth of Pharr, Rachel (Gregorio) of San Juan, Sandra (Albert) of Pharr; eight nieces and nephews, Joseph (Vanessa) Fuentes, Austin (Kathleen) Fuentes, Michael Delgadillo, Hailey Molina, Gregorio Molina, Hayden Lujan, Dominic Lujan, and Taylor Lujan; numerous extended family members and close friends. Her son and nephews will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Celebration of Life service, Monday, August 28, 2023, at Legacy Chapels 4610 South Jackson Road in Edinburg. Funeral service will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at Palm Valley Church in Mission. Interment will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr.
