MCALLEN - Clara Ann Garcia, 71, passed away on Saturday, October 31, 2026. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend whose love, humor, and generous spirit filled her family’s lives.
Born in Kingsville, Texas, on February 1, 1955, to Evancio Gutierrez and Aida Gutierrez de Cabra, Clara was the youngest of six children. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Francisco Guiterrez and Evancio Guiterrez Junior. She is survived by her sisters, Rosalinda Gutierrez, Leonor Fernandez, and Aida Bebon. Clara grew up in Kingsville and attended HM King High School. From an early age, family held a central place in her life. She helped raise her nieces, becoming a second mother to them and forming bonds that endured throughout her life. The Gutierrez family belonged to St. Martine of Tours Catholic Church in Kingsville, where Clara was baptized and confirmed. She started her studies at Texas A&I University in 1973 for three years, pursuing studies in Secretarial Studies. At age 21, Clara met the love of her life, Raul Eduardo Garcia, of San Diego, Texas. Raul, then 19 and a freshman at Texas A&M University, had returned home for the weekend when he first encountered Clara, a beautiful young woman visiting with his cousin Angie Huerta. That meeting marked the beginning of a love story that would grow into more than 46 years of marriage.
Their courtship became a treasured part of the family’s story. During his three years at Texas A&M in College Station, and later after transferring to Texas A&I in Kingsville, he found every opportunity to be near her. Sometimes those trips to Kingsville meant risking his parents’ displeasure, but spending time with Clara was always worth it to him. They married on April 12, 1980, at St. Martine Kingsville Texas, beginning a marriage rooted in love and a shared commitment to family. Over the years, Clara and Frances Garcia, her mother-in-law, developed a close and loving relationship, sharing happy memories that included trips to Las Vegas. When her mother-in-law moved to McAllen in her final years, Clara cared for her with tenderness and devotion. Their bond grew into something beautiful to witness, reflecting Clara’s generous heart and the depth of her love for family.
Together, Clara and Raul raised four children: Clarissa Ana Garcia, Dr. Laura ElenaGarcia, Raul Eduardo Garcia Jr., and Dr. Diana Andrea Garcia Vasquez. While the family lived in San Antonio, Clara devoted herself to raising their children as a stay-at- home mother. Later, she brought that same dedication to her work as co-owner and business manager of RE Garcia & Associates, the engineering and surveying firm she and Raul established in Edinburg in 1987. They made their home in McAllen, where the family attended Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Clara found tremendous joy in her six grandchildren: Carlos Andres Garcia and Arissa Elena Garcia, children of Clarissa; Yessenia Yvette Garcia and Raul Eduardo Garcia III, children of Raul Jr.; and Frances Marie Vasquez and Michaela Rose Vasquez, children of Diana. She delighted in their individual talents and interests, celebrating their achievements in sports, art, music, and debate. Whatever they pursued, they knew their grandmother would be there, cheering them on.
Clara’s voice could be heard from the stands, proudly encouraging her children and grandchildren. When a game became too close, she could hardly bear to watch, stealing sideways glances as she waited for the outcome. Her enthusiasm reflected how deeply she cared: she wanted the very best for each of them and shared wholeheartedly in their excitement. Funny, smart, and full of warmth, Clara loved to laugh and had a gift for making those around her feel loved. She enjoyed watching football with Raul and faithfully cheering for the Dallas Cowboys—even when they gave her plenty of reasons to shake her head. Those everyday moments of laughter and companionship were a cherished part of their life together.
Clara’s love extended far beyond her immediate family. She became a grandmother figure to many and a dear friend to those fortunate enough to know her. She welcomed others into her heart, offering the same affection, encouragement, and care that she gave her own children and grandchildren. Clara’s legacy lives on in her beloved husband, Raul; their children and grandchildren; her surviving siblings; the nieces she helped raise; and the many relatives and friends whose lives she touched. Her laughter, her unmistakable cheers, and the love she gave so freely will remain with all who knew her.
