EDINBURG - Daniel Arnoldo “Nono” Leal, 81, entered eternal rest on Thursday, September 26, 2024. Mr. Leal is preceded in death by his parents, Juan Leal lll and Maria Leal; 3 siblings, Maria Luisa Garcia, Juan Leal V and Juan Leal IV. Mr. Leal was a beloved father, husband, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Mr. Leal was born on August 28, 1943, in Benavides, TX, and grew up in Concepción (La Chona), TX. He proudly served his country as a medic during the Vietnam War. After his service, he attended Pan American University, where he earned his Master’s degree. He went on to become a respected educator and counselor at PSJA ISD, dedicating 33 years of his life to helping students and colleagues alike. Throughout his career, he was known for his kindness, sense of humor, and passion for supporting others. Daniel was also a pillar of his community, serving on the board of NAFT Federal Credit Union for 37 years and supporting the South Texas Striders for over 10 years. He was also a member of the American Legion 101 in Pharr, Firing Squad 3 and Honor Guard 5.
Above all, Mr. Leal was a devoted father and friend. He took immense pride in the achievements of his children and grandchildren, sharing their accomplishments with everyone he met. A true social butterfly, Daniel’s presence and smile could light up any room. He loved to sing and dance with his family, spreading positivity wherever he went.
Though his passing leaves an undeniable void, Daniel’s spirit will continue to shine brightly—a lasting beacon of positivity, laughter, and happiness.
Mr. Leal is survived by his wife and "partner in crime", Nelda E. Leal; 2 children, Jessica Danielle (Francisco Javier) Leal-Porras and Daniel Anthony (Blanca) Leal; 6 grandchildren, Alexa Danielle Porras, Andrew Xavier Porras, Adrian Joaquin Porras, Angelina Rose Leal, Allie Nicole Leal and Ryan Daniel Leal; two siblings, Dr. Gilberto (Norma) Leal of Harlingen and Coach Mario A. (Maria Christina) Leal of Corpus Christi; numerous family and friends.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with 6 p.m. rosary, Sunday September 29, 2024, at Legacy Chapels 4610 South Jackson Road in Edinburg. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 3, 2024 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg. Inurnment will follow to Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission.
In lieu of flowers, plants are greatly appreciated.
Funeral services are under the direction of Legacy Chapels in Edinburg.
