Dr. Elisa G. Sanchez

MISSION - Elisa Garza Sanchez, M.D. passed away peacefully in her home on April 29, 2026, at 1:00 am, accompanied by her family. She was born Elisa Maria Garza Garza on December 4, 1955, and she grew up in Camargo, Tamaulipas, Mexico, a town that always held a special place in her heart and which provided her with experiences, connections, and memories she valued her whole life.

She was preceded in death by her father Jose Adan Garza Hinojosa, her mother Esperanza Garza Barrera, her older brother Jesus Angel Garza Garza, her older sisters Marta Elva Garza Garza and Maria Esperanza Garza Garza, and her surrogate brother Valente Garcia. In 1980, Elisa lost her mother and two older sisters in a car accident. This tragedy brought immense and unyielding grief but she adapted through her trademark resiliency and left her with a greater appreciation for life and an ability to empathize with others facing loss- all of which served her well.

In 1982, Elisa Garza Garza married Margil Sanchez Jr. of Rio Grande City. In 1992, they built their dream home in Mission, Texas. Elisa spent the next few years decorating and furnishing it with her unique sense of design and eclectic sensibilities. Her home reflected her creativity, her travels, and her pride in her Mexican heritage.

From the time Elisa was in second grade, she started telling her classmates and teachers that she was going to be a medical doctor. When she told her father of her dream, he assured her that she would be a doctor but one that would serve the impoverished members of her community. As a student, she excelled in everything she did, including poetry, oratory, and academia, but she never lost sight of her goal. She earned medical diplomas from the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon in 1979 and from the University of Texas San Antonio in 1986. In the process Elisa completed two residencies: one in México and the other at UTSA in San Antonio. During her tenure at UTSA, she wrote two articles in psychiatry that were published in leading American Medical Journals.

She was the first female psychiatrist to practice in the Rio Grande Valley. She used her expertise in psychiatry in various settings, including opening her own practice in Pharr. She also worked in a center for foster children, a pain management center, and with those impacted by the criminal justice system. She became the director of Charter Palms Hospital in 1992. She always enjoyed new challenges and worked as a professor at UTPA, hosting multiple local radio and TV segments, and presenting at conferences throughout the United States. She had the unique capacity to heal patients that other doctors could not manage even after many years of treatment. Her patients were devoted to her.

She was an adoring wife, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her husband and their three children Gabriel Adan Sanchez, Cristian Margil Sanchez, and Melanie Moreno Sanchez and by her sons-in-law Javier Clemente Cantu Sanchez and Adrian Melgar Sanchez, and her grandchildren Mia Sinahi Moreno, Natividad Melgar-Sanchez, and Itzari Melgar-Sanchez. She is also survived by her younger sister Elena Mayra Garza Acevedo and her brother Jose Adan Garza, as well as her cherished cousins, in-laws, nephews, nieces, and close friends.

She loved to travel and experience other cultures. She traveled throughout North America, visiting almost every state in the United States and vacationed in Mexico and Canada several times. She visited the countries of China, Jordan, Bolivia, Peru, Cuba, Tanzania, and Kenya. In Europe she visited the countries of France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Austria, Vatican City, and the Netherlands. She made every trip an adventure whether it was going to San Benito or to the state of Mississippi. She loved going to South Padre Island and to her ancestral lands at Rancho Santo Domingo in Los Martinez, Tamaulipas, Mexico.

She cherished wildlife and plants. She was devoted to her pets, and she frequently adopted stray or abandoned dogs and gave them a nurturing home.

In the mid-1990s, while thriving in her career and family life, she decided to take on a new challenge. She spent years writing a novel inspired by her experiences with the loss and tragedy that afflicted her life. She published two books: a novel De Amores, Duelos, y Otros Desconsuelos in 2007, that completely sold out its first printing, and Untender Mercies in 2009.

She was fiercely proud of, and loyal to, her roots and the land and culture that she grew up in: being Mexican, being from the border, being a woman were all things she celebrated constantly, and she encouraged others in the Rio Grande Valley to take pride in their unique culture and origins.

Her Catholic faith was unbreakable, and she relied on it to overcome the tragedies and losses that beset her life.

Dr. Elisa Garza Sanchez achieved all the goals she set for herself in life. Many people’s lives were touched by her gift for healing, unbounded capacity for love, and forgiving nature that was matched by her sense of wit and humor. She will be deeply missed by her family and the community that she loved, that loved her, and that she left forever transformed for the better.

A memorial service will be held Sunday May 3, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm with a Celebration of Life at 6 p.m. followed by a rosary at 7 p.m. at Legacy Chapels, 4610 S. Jackson Rd., Edinburg, TX 78539. In conformance with her wish, she will be buried in Rio Grande City, TX.
