Jose Hernandez

January 1, 1942 — February 15, 2022

JOSE HERNANDEZ PHARR- Jose “Joe” Hernandez, my loving husband of nearly 55 years, joined our Heavenly Father on Tuesday morning, February 15, 2022, at the age of 79. He was a godly man who awoke with a smile each day to pray to our Holy Father. He read the Bible daily and set a great example for our family. He was a blessing to me, our children, and grandchildren. We thank our Lord for sharing this beautiful person with us. Joe was born on February 22, 1942, in El Capote Ranch, Texas, and graduated from McAllen High School in 1962. He joined the Air Force and trained as an aircraft mechanic. He lovingly wrote to me and his parents, Gumecindo and Maria (Cantu) Hernandez, as he traveled the world. Although we possessed opposite qualities, Joe was my soulmate – my other half. He completed me. We married in 1967. Joe was brilliant, hardworking, fun-loving and loved to travel with his family. Always eager to learn something new and share it with his family, Joe took us on fun weekend and summer trips to the beach, the Frio River, Six Flags, New Mexico, and many other places. Often, we’d visit family. Joe taught his children to love: God, life, each other, relatives, strangers, and all of God’s creation. He was in awe of God’s greatness and His goodness. Everything Joe did in life was done with love. He was a humble man, forgiving, honest and sincere. He loved to share the latest thing he read about angels, the Virgin Mary, or what he saw on Good Morning America. He was always making or repairing something for the house or his family. You’d make his day if you joined him in singing the Devine Mercy Chaplet or shared any part of your day with him. Although he was hard of hearing, Joe was a great listener. Those closest to him lovingly referred to him as “Mil Historias.” Over time that became “Mismas Mil Historias Largas.” He was a very wise, accepting, and patient man. He was a true gift that will be deeply missed by me and our children: Jose Jr. (Liberty), Jaime, Jon, Jason (Marissa), Kristina Leal (Jay), Joshua (Sally), and Jeremiah (Elizabeth), and our 18 grandchildren. He is survived by his sisters Virginia Saenz (Feliciano) and Dalia Garza (Oliveiro-deceased). We cling to the many beautiful memories and stories he filled our lives with, and we rejoice in knowing that Jesus defeated sin and death for those that believe in Him (John 11:25-26). Joe was a true believer. Rosary will be held on Joe’s birthday, Tuesday, February 22nd at Legacy Chapel at 7 PM. Funeral mass will be at St. Anne's Mother of Mary Church in Pharr on Wednesday, February 23rd at 11 AM. A full military burial will follow the mass at the Rio Grande Veterans Cemetery in Mission. Funeral services are under the direction of Legacy Chapels in Edinburg.
