Macaria Castillo Hernandez "Nanay Carìng"

MCALLEN - Macaria Castillo Hernandez "Nanay Carìng", 96, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, in McAllen surrounded by her family. Nanay Carìng was preceded in death by her husband, Ireneo T. Hernandez; her parents, Simon Castillo and Asuncion Bautista Castillo; her sister, Aurora Butiu. 

Nanay Carìng is survived by her seven children, Virginia (Ricardo) Tanueco, Rhodora Hernandez, Barbara Hernandez, Gabriel (Geraldine) Hernandez, Gilda Horr, Aurea (Miguel) Gomez, and Maria Concepcion (James) Caldwell; 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; three siblings, Rita Olayvar, Jesus B. Castillo, and Luzminda Ordiales; numerous nieces and nephews. 

Nanay Caring touched the lives of so many, in immeasurable ways.  She was a devout Catholic and a Marian devotee who truly lived her faith at home as a wife; mother; sister; grandmother, and great grandmother.  She loved and served her family and extended biological family unconditionally.  She was a spiritual leader; a prayer warrior for all; the financial provider even by working several moonlighting jobs; caregiver to a sick sister and to her mother.  Nanay Caring was selfless, loving, kind and generous.  Nanay Caring was a living witness of faith and holiness even beyond her home and family.  She shared her faigth with coworkers and with everone she met by chance or circumstance and led many to the Catholic faith.  She was easy to love and a pleasure to have around.  Her hobbies included cooking; playing the piano; singing kundimans; watching detective and action movies; word search, and coloring.  We will miss you dearly, Nanay.  

Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday May 31, 2025, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in McAllen. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a 6 p.m. rosary Saturday, May 31, 2025, at Legacy Chapels 4610 South Jackson Road in Edinburg. 

Funeral services are under the direction of Legacy Chapels in Edinburg.
