In Loving Memory of Maria Palmira Vela Garza
With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Maria Palmira Vela Garza—beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and cherished friend—who departed this life peacefully on June 12, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on May 26, 1946, in McAllen, TX, to the late Jose Ramiro Vela and Manuela Garza Vela, Palmira lived a life defined by unwavering devotion, resilience, joy, and boundless love.
Palmira was the proud matriarch of a large, close-knit family. She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved son Mark Edward Garza. She is survived by her loving daughters, Tessa Pequeno (Wally) and Jennifer Judith Garza Hausenfluck (Brandon); four adoring grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews—all of whom were blessed by her constant warmth, steadfast guidance, and unconditional love. She is also survived by her devoted brother Ramiro Vela (Elma), and her dear sister, Sandra Vallecillos (Jose Luis).
A woman of deep conviction and tireless dedication, Palmira devoted over 45 years to education, shaping countless lives as a lifelong teacher. As a founding educator at Morris Middle School, she was admired for her passion, her commitment to excellence, and her extraordinary ability to inspire both students and colleagues alike. A devout Catholic, Palmira led by example, instilling strong values, love, and spiritual strength in her children and grandchildren. Her faith was a constant source of comfort and purpose in her life.
Family gatherings and holidays were especially dear to her. She was known for making birthdays unforgettable and bringing unity to every occasion. Her deep love for family was the heart of all she did. Above all else, Palmira was a loving mother, devoted grandmother, and a constant source of strength, comfort, and encouragement. She was a proud Texas Longhorn fan. She stood as a steady pillar for everyone around her.
Palmira will be lovingly remembered for her vibrant spirit, her enduring love, and the genuine friendships she so effortlessly nurtured. Her life was a blessing to all who knew her, and her memory will live on in our hearts forever.
Funeral mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday June 21, 2025, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in McAllen. Interment of her cremated remains will be held privately by her family.
Funeral services are under the direction of Legacy Chapels in Edinburg.
