ZAPATA- Richard Leland Haven, of Zapata, Texas, born in Iowa, passed from life on October 10, 2025 at the age of 94. Mr. Haven was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Mary Ann Haven, and his parents, Mark Haven and Leona Larson Haven.
Richard was a proud member of the Iowa National Guard for three years until discharged in 1957. He started working as a draftsman with Stanley Consultants in Muscatine, Iowa, then transitioned to Allied Chemical of Hopewell, Virginia, as a mechanical engineer winning multiple awards over the course of his professional life. After years of family vacations on Buggs Island Lake, Virginia, Mary and he celebrated retirement by moving to a house on Bluestone Creek at Clarksville, Virginia. They fulfilled their dream of traveling around the USA with their beloved dogs, as well as visiting archeological sites and resorts in Mexico. They became permanent residents of Zapata, Texas after each annual visit became longer than the previous one.
Richard shot pistol competition at national level, often partnering with his wife. He enjoyed competition shooting, reloading ammo after shooting, hunting when younger, reading, camping, fishing, and traveling on cruises. Of course, he taught his children shooting, fishing, and hunting.
Mr. Haven is survived by three children; daughters, Sheryl Haven of Richmond, Virginia, and Barbara Haven of South Boston, Virginia, and son, Les Haven of Huntsville, Alabama, brothers-in-law, Tom and Gary Joines, and dear friend, Romeo Mercado of Zapata, Texas. He will be missed by his family and friends. In leu of flowers, please donate in Richard's name to his favorite charity, Special Olympics Virginia, or the charity of your choice.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are entrusted to Legacy Chapels of Edinberg, Texas.
